Changing Codecs Using the CLI

If you want to change codecs, enter the following commands using the CLI:

`Router(config)#` `ephone 1`	Enters the ephone 1 configuration mode.
`Router(config-ephone)#` `codec g729r8`	Specifies the G.729 codec for ephone 1.
`Router(config-ephone)#` `ephone 2`	Enters the ephone 2 configuration mode.
`Router(config-ephone)#` `codec g729r8`	Specifies the G.729 codec for ephone 2.
`Router(config-ephone)#` `end`	Returns to the CLI privilege exec program mode.

Note

The codec configuration on both ephones must be the same.

Note

The G.729 codec uses 29.6 kbps of bandwidth per voice stream when including the layer 2 and layer 3 overhead with the voice payload. In comparison, the G.711 codec uses 85.6 kbps of bandwidth under the same conditions.

Figure 2-18 shows the call statistics on the IP Communicator after the codec has been changed.
