Using Multicast or Unicast

Using Multicast or Unicast
Addresses to Locate the Gatekeeper
When configuring endpoints and gateways to use gatekeepers, either a multicast
or unicast address must be used to locate and register with the gatekeeper. When
using multicast addressing, there is less control over where endpoints will register
since they will register with the first gatekeeper to reply to their request. If the
network is configured such that only one gatekeeper will register any given endpoint
or gateway, there is very little advantage to using multicast addressing.
Multicast addressing does allow the address of the gatekeeper to change with
no reconfiguration on endpoints or gateways, though with unicast addressing, using
a DNS name rather than a specific IP address accomplishes the same goal. Using
multicast addressing does require multicast routing to be enabled in the network.
